چکیده

The lower portion of the Sacramento River, California, has been highly engineered to protect low-lying surrounding communities from annual flood events. While engineered floodplains have provided adequate protection for the surrounding communities, there remain unintended consequences to migratory fish that become stranded during high flow events. In April 2011, we rescued 24 threatened Green Sturgeon Acipenser medirostris that were stranded in two flood diversions along the Sacramento River. We tagged these 24 Green Sturgeon with acoustic tags and analyzed their survival and migration success to their spawning grounds. Additionally, we provided a population viability analysis to show the potential impacts of stranding and the benefits of conducting rescues at the population level. We found that 17 of these 24 individuals continued their upstream migration to the spawning grounds. Modeling suggests that recurrent stranding of a similar magnitude without rescue could affect the long-term viability of Green Sturgeon *Corresponding author: [email protected] Received May 4, 2012; accepted December 6, 2012 287 D ow nl oa de d by [ U ni ve rs ity o f C al if or ni a D av is ] at 1 1: 22 0 4 A pr il 20 13

Larval green and white sturgeon swimming performance in relation to water-diversion flows

Little is known of the swimming capacities of larval sturgeons, despite global population declines in many species due in part to fragmentation of their spawning and rearing habitats by man-made water-diversion structures. Larval green (Acipenser medirostris) and white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) inhabit the highly altered Sacramento-San Joaquin watershed, making them logical species to ...

Detection of Adult Green Sturgeon Using Environmental DNA Analysis

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is an emerging sampling method that has been used successfully for detection of rare aquatic species. The Identification of sampling tools that are less stressful for target organisms has become increasingly important for rare and endangered species. A decline in abundance of the Southern Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of North American Green Sturgeon located in Cali...

Indirect genetic estimates of breeding population size in the polyploid green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris).

The utility of genetic measures for kinship reconstruction in polysomic species is not well evaluated. We developed a framework to test hypotheses about estimating breeding population size indirectly from collections of outmigrating green sturgeon juveniles. We evaluated a polysomic dataset, in allelic frequency and phenotypic formats, from green sturgeon to describe the relationship among know...

Genetic differentiation of spring-spawning and fall-spawning male Atlantic sturgeon in the James River, Virginia

Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Acipenseridae) populations are currently at severely depleted levels due to historic overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. The importance of biologically correct stock structure for effective conservation and management efforts is well known. Recent improvements in our understanding of Atlantic sturgeon migrations, movement, and the occurr...

Unscreened Water-Diversion Pipes Pose an Entrainment Risk to the Threatened Green Sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris

Over 3,300 unscreened agricultural water diversion pipes line the levees and riverbanks of the Sacramento River (California) watershed, where the threatened Southern Distinct Population Segment of green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris, spawn. The number of sturgeon drawn into (entrained) and killed by these pipes is greatly unknown. We examined avoidance behaviors and entrainment susceptibility...
